Villa’s man of the moment dislikes his status as the super-sub but another outstanding goal, on such a big stage, will only enhance his growing reputation.
The £14 million signing from Chicago Fire now has six goals in all competitions, with five now coming from the bench, and this could be the most memorable of the lot.

Torres has arguably been one of Villa’s most underrated players since his arrival from Villarreal and his 40-yard pass dissects the Bayern defence to find Duran on the shoulder of Dayot Upamecano.
Spotting Manuel Neuer off his line, Duran waits for the ball to bounce into his path, holding off Upamecano before hooking a remarkable shot over the head of the Bayern goalkeeper.
Questions will inevitably be asked over Neuer’s positioning, but for Duran to display such quick thinking only underlines why he is so highly rated.
He has scored one of the great European goals for Villa and the first in the Champions League at this famous old stadium since Paolo Rossi for Juventus in 1983.
Martinez, another Villa hero with a fine late save in added time, said of Duran: “He’s been on fire and came back with a different mentality for this season.
“He’s a super-sub and the first time he’s touched the ball he’s lobbed one of the best goalkeepers in history.”
